Why Ulsan Dongheon & Naea (울산 동헌 및 내아) Is Worth a Stop on Your Korea Trip

Located just 20 minutes north of Busan by KTX (and 2 hours 10 minutes from Seoul Station), Ulsan Jung-gu (167 Dongheon-gil, Jung-gu, Ulsan) preserves a remarkably serene Joseon-dynasty administrative compound surrounded by centuries-old zelkova and hackberry trees. While tourist crowds pack Gyeongju’s main streets nearby, you can stroll through Ulsan Dongheon and Naea in complete tranquility—and admission is 100% free.

Architectural Highlights of Banhakheon (반학헌) & Naea

Designated as Ulsan Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 1, Dongheon (동헌) served as the central government hall where Joseon Dynasty magistrates conducted public affairs in Ulsan Dohobu:

  • Built in 1681, Rebuilt as "Banhakheon" in 1763: First constructed in the 7th year of King Sukjong (1681) by Magistrate Kim Su-o, the hall was expanded in 1763 by Magistrate Jo Ik-myeong and named Banhakheon.
  • Classic 6-Kan by 2-Kan Paljak Roof Structure: Notice the graceful upward curve of the Paljak (hip-and-gable) tiled roof supported by cylindrical wooden columns resting on carved granite foundation stones.
  • The Connected Naea (내아) Living Quarters: Right beside the public hall sits the Naea—the private family residence of the magistrate—featuring quiet wooden verandas and traditional courtyard gardens.
