A Real-Fossil Dinosaur Museum on Korea's West Coast
Anmyeondo Jurassic Museum (안면도 쥬라기박물관) is a natural history museum at 37-20 Gomseom-ro, Nam-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. It is known for displaying genuine dinosaur fossils. It opened on July 5, 2011 and welcomes about 200,000 visitors a year.
Indoor exhibits and hands-on attractions share one site, so it makes an easy half-day trip. It's also a good choice on cloudy or rainy days.
Getting there: Taean is on the west coast of Chungcheongnam-do. Most international visitors base themselves in Seoul, the nearest major hub, and travel to Taean by intercity bus or rental car. Check current schedules before you go.
What to See Inside
- Permanent fossil galleries: Dinosaur and natural history specimens built around genuine fossils, along a set route. The aisles are wide enough for strollers.
- Diplodocus & Suuwassea: Skeletons from the Morrison Formation in the USA, where excavation is still going on. The long-necked skeleton is the museum's favorite photo spot.
- The world's first Tyrannosaurus egg: Discovered by Dr. Glen Rocker of Argentina. It sits in a glass case where you can see the surface texture up close, and kids tend to linger here.
- More skeletons and specimens: The galleries continue with more dinosaur skeletons and natural history specimens.
AR/VR Zone & Astronomy Hall
The site also has an AR and VR experience hall where dinosaurs come to life. Visit it after the galleries, since wait times depend on crowds. There is also an astronomy science hall. Its opening hours can change, so check before you go.
